Whether used for shipspotting on the coast or on board a boat, the MarineGadget-Radar provides an extremely portable, simple to install (powered over USB and no USB to serial adaptors) and low cost AIS receiver.

Requires a marine/VHF antenna (see Antenna Page or Prices/ordering page for options) with BNC or SMA connection and a PC, laptop or netbook with USB.

The MGR-1 AIS receiver requires that your PC or laptop will have loaded suitable plotting software that can understand AIS NMEA VDM messages on a serial port.
A trial time limited version of ShipPlotter is included. The full version can be purchased online at www.shipplotter.com (about 25 Euro + VAT).
The free SeaClear software, www.spring.com/seaclear/  can also be used, but note their terms and conditions of use.
Other mapping software such as SoftwareOnBoard is also compatible.
To use the MGR-1 on a boat, without the need for internet connection, a PC compatible USB/GPS receiver (which are available relatively cheaply) or an adaptor for NMEA from an existing boat GPS is needed. The MGR-1 does not have an NMEA input.

AIS-equipped systems present the bearing and distance of nearby vessels in a radar-like display format. Information provided by AIS equipment, such as unique identification, position, course, and speed, can be displayed on a computer screen, together with information about their destination, estimated time of arrival and even the dimensions of each vessel.

Range is basically limited by line of sight, the relatively low power of ship transponders and the height and gain of your antenna. Typical range at sea level with a low level antenna 12Nm, or with an elevated antenna position 20-50Nm.

Compatible with Windows XP, Vista 32-bit & Windows 7    64-bit versions of Windows Vista are not supported
